Jacksonville health insurance, from a broker who grew up there

I help self-employed people, families, and small business owners in Jacksonville buy their own coverage. I work out of Tampa these days, but I never let go of the 904.

I'm Ryan Caprio, a licensed Florida health insurance broker (NPN 22091157), and before I was any of that I was a kid in Jacksonville. Born and raised, a Douglas Anderson School of the Arts kid, first jobs, family still scattered across town. My office is in Tampa now, but a Florida license works statewide, my clients do everything with me by text and phone anyway, and my business number still starts with 904. I kept it on purpose. If you're in Jax and buying your own coverage, I can help without either of us leaving the house.

What working with me costs

Nothing. The insurance companies pay the commission whether you use a broker or not, so the plan costs the same with or without me. The difference is that you get a licensed human who knows your name and picks up the phone, instead of a call center.

Who calls me from Jacksonville

Mostly three kinds of people. Self-employed and 1099 workers: contractors, realtors, stylists, consultants, drivers, anyone whose income comes from work they built themselves. Small business owners trying to figure out whether a group plan or individual coverage makes more sense for a team of three, which I walk through in the employer guide. And plenty of people just over the county line in Orange Park and Fleming Island, who deal with a slightly different set of networks. And people my family and friends send my way, which is honestly the best part of working your hometown.

How buying your own coverage works in Jacksonville

Florida runs on the federal marketplace at HealthCare.gov, and it's the biggest marketplace state in the country. Prices and plan lineups are set county by county, so what somebody pays in Tampa tells you nothing about Duval. Two things Jacksonville buyers should have on their radar right now: the enhanced subsidies expired at the end of 2025, which means the old cliff at four times the poverty line is back, and Florida never expanded Medicaid, so a lean year can drop your income into a gap where neither subsidies nor Medicaid catch you. None of that is a reason to panic. It's a reason to run your real numbers before you pick a plan.

There's also a second door most people never hear about: private plans outside the marketplace, which can enroll year-round and sometimes price out better if you're healthy and don't qualify for much subsidy. I quote both doors side by side, every time. If you want the full explanation, my private vs. marketplace guide covers it.

The hospital question

Jacksonville has serious hospitals. Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville campus was just named the top hospital in Florida in the 2026-27 U.S. News rankings. Baptist Health runs campuses from downtown out to Baptist Beaches. UF Health covers downtown and the Northside. Ascension St. Vincent's has campuses in Riverside and on the Southside. Whether your plan covers any of them is a network question, not a brand question: two plans with identical premiums can treat Mayo and Baptist completely differently. Checking your doctors and hospitals against the network is part of every quote I run, and if you're out at the Beaches or up on the Northside, that check matters even more, because the nearest in-network ER is a different answer depending on where in town you are.

Working with me from Jax

Everything happens by text, phone, or video: the quotes, the side-by-side comparison, enrollment, signatures. Most clients spend under an hour on the whole thing, spread across a couple of days, most of it by text. You will not sit on hold. And when I'm home visiting family, there's a good chance I'm in the water. I grew up surfing the Poles at Hanna Park, 10th Street in Atlantic Beach, and the pier at Jax Beach, and I still paddle out when I'm in town. Half the lineup at any of those spots works for themselves, so maybe this job was inevitable. I also still keep up with the Jaguars, for better or worse.

Questions Jacksonville folks actually ask

Can you actually help me if you're based in Tampa?

Yes. A Florida license is statewide, and my work with Jacksonville clients happens by text, phone, and video anyway. You can verify my license through Florida's Department of Financial Services using NPN 22091157.

Are Jacksonville plans different from Tampa plans?

Same federal marketplace, different math. Carriers set prices and networks county by county, so Duval County quotes come out different from Hillsborough. That's why I quote with your zip code, not mine. Same reason a St. Johns County address prices differently than a Duval one, even when the hospitals are the same.

Will my plan cover Mayo, Baptist, UF Health, or St. Vincent's?

That depends on the plan's network, not the logo on your card. Two plans that cost the same can treat the same hospital completely differently. Checking the hospitals and doctors you actually use is part of every quote I run.

What does a broker cost in Florida?

Nothing. Commissions are built into the premium whether you use a broker or not, so you pay the same either way. The difference is having someone who answers when something breaks.

I'm self-employed in Jacksonville. Where do I start?

Start with a marketplace quote and a private quote side by side, with your real income and your real doctors in the math. My self-employed guide walks through the whole thing, or skip the reading and text me.

What if my income is too low for a subsidy?

Florida never expanded Medicaid, so below a certain income you can land in a gap where neither program helps. There are still moves worth checking before you give up, and they depend on your household. Talk to someone before you guess.
