The four main plan types

Every plan is a tradeoff between flexibility and cost. Here's how they differ.

HMO

Lower cost, in-network care

You pick a primary care doctor and stay within the plan's network. Referrals are usually needed to see specialists. In exchange, premiums and out-of-pocket costs tend to be the lowest.

Best forBudget-focused, healthy, happy to stay in-network
TradeoffLess flexibility; out-of-network usually not covered
PPO

Maximum flexibility

See almost any doctor or specialist, in or out of network, without a referral. The most freedom of any plan type, which is why premiums usually run higher.

Best forPeople who want choice, travel, or have preferred doctors
TradeoffHigher premiums for the added flexibility
EPO

A middle ground

Like a PPO, you often don't need referrals, but like an HMO you must stay in-network (except emergencies). PPO-style freedom inside the network, at a friendlier price.

Best forWanting some flexibility without PPO pricing
TradeoffOut-of-network care generally isn't covered
POS

The hybrid

A blend of HMO and PPO: you'll typically have a primary care doctor and need referrals, but you can go out-of-network at a higher cost when you need to.

Best forWanting low in-network costs with an out-of-network option
TradeoffReferrals required; out-of-network costs more
Beyond medical

Everything else you might need

Health coverage is the core, but a good plan often includes more.

Dental & vision

Standalone or add-on plans to round out your coverage without overpaying.

COBRA alternatives

Lost or leaving a job? COBRA is often overpriced. I'll show you what private coverage really costs first.

Term life

Simple, affordable protection for your family, often bundled with health coverage.

Supplemental plans

Accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity coverage to fill the gaps a base plan leaves.

55

Under-65 bridge coverage

Retiring early? I'll get you comfortably to Medicare with no gaps or surprises.

Small business

Options for you and a few employees without a big-company benefits department.

How it works

Three steps. Zero runaround.

1

Tell me your situation

A quick call or 2-minute form: your budget, your doctors, what matters to you.

2

I shop it honestly

I compare plans across my carriers and lay out the real tradeoffs. No jargon, no upsell.

3

You enroll with confidence

You pick, I handle the paperwork, and I'm here all year, not just at signup.

Straight answers

Coverage questions, answered

Can I keep my own doctor?

Often, yes. It depends on the plan's network. Tell me the doctors and hospitals you want to keep, and I'll steer you toward plans that include them. It's one of the first things I check.

How much will a plan cost me?

It depends on your age, location, household, and the coverage you choose. There's no honest one-size answer, but I'll show you real numbers for real plans side by side, not a vague range.

What's the difference between a private plan and the ACA marketplace?

The marketplace offers subsidized ACA plans; private plans can offer different networks, pricing, and structures that sometimes fit better, especially for the self-employed. I'll compare both honestly and tell you which makes sense for you.

Does it cost more to use a broker?

No. Carriers build a broker commission into the plan price whether you use one or not, so your premium is the same either way. You just get an advocate for free.

What if I'm not sure what I need?

That's the normal starting point, and exactly my job. Book a free call, tell me what's going on, and I'll walk you through it in plain English with no pressure.
