I am based in Tampa, and Illinois is one of the 19 states where I hold an active license, issued under my National Producer Number, so the licence number and the NPN are the same: 22091157. You can verify it yourself before we ever talk. Everything happens by phone or text, I run quotes while we are on the line, and it costs you nothing, because commissions are built into the premium whether you use a broker or not.
Illinois now runs its own marketplace
Illinois moved off the federal site to a state marketplace called Get Covered Illinois. The ACA rules are unchanged: no one is declined for health history, no one pays more for a pre-existing condition, and subsidies still track the income you expect for the year. What changes is the website and the calendar. Illinois sets its own dates, and for 2027 coverage it has landed on the same window as the federal site: November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. That is the state’s choice rather than an automatic match, which is why it is worth confirming each year. The date I would actually circle is December 15, 2026, because it is the last day to pick a plan that starts January 1. Enroll after that and coverage does not begin until February 1, and you have bought yourself an uninsured January. My open enrollment guide covers the detail, including the appeal still running against the rule that would have shortened the season.
Illinois also has a private market outside the exchange. Those plans ask health questions, they can decline an applicant, and they enroll year round, which sometimes makes them a better fit for a healthy buyer who earns too much for a subsidy. They are a different product with different rules, not the same coverage at a discount. The private plans vs. the marketplace guide lays out the difference. I quote both, side by side.
Illinois expanded Medicaid
Worth stating plainly, because it is not true in every state I am licensed in. Illinois expanded Medicaid, so low income adults are not stranded in the coverage gap that exists in Florida, Texas and South Carolina. If your income is low, or it moves around from month to month, there is a genuine floor underneath you. The estimate you put on your application still matters, because it decides which program you land in, so if your income is hard to predict, say so before we choose anything.
Chicago networks are not downstate networks
Whether a plan covers your hospital is a network question, not a brand question, and Illinois is a state where that bites. The systems that anchor a plan in Chicago and the collar counties are not the ones that anchor it in Peoria, Rockford or southern Illinois, and two plans at the same premium can treat the same hospital completely differently. If you travel between the two, or your specialist is in the city and you are not, that needs checking before you enroll, not after. It is part of every quote I run.
If you work for yourself, everything in the self-employed guide applies here: the premium deduction, estimating a variable income, and the marketplace versus private decision.
Questions Illinoisans actually ask
Can an out-of-state broker help me in Illinois?
Yes. Insurance licensing is state by state, and I hold an active Illinois non-resident license. Illinois issues it under my National Producer Number, so the licence number and the NPN are the same: 22091157. You can verify it before we ever talk.
Does Illinois use HealthCare.gov?
Illinois moved to its own state marketplace, Get Covered Illinois. Same ACA rules, different website and a different calendar from the federal site.
When is open enrollment in Illinois?
For 2027 coverage it runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Illinois sets that date itself rather than inheriting the federal one, so it is worth confirming each year. Either way, December 15, 2026 is the one to circle: it is the last day to pick a plan that starts January 1. After that, coverage begins February 1.
Did Illinois expand Medicaid?
Yes. Illinois expanded Medicaid, so there is no coverage gap here of the kind that exists in non-expansion states. Your income estimate still decides which program you qualify for.
What does health insurance cost in Illinois?
It depends on your age, your county, your income, and whether a marketplace or private plan fits better. Text me your zip code and age and I will give you real numbers the same day.
Want both quotes for your Illinois zip code?
Send me your situation and I will show you both doors, with real numbers, in one conversation. Free, no pressure.
Get my options →The bottom line
Illinois runs its own marketplace on its own calendar, expanded Medicaid so the floor is real, and has a network split between Chicago and the rest of the state that catches people out. Comparing both doors is worth one conversation. It costs you nothing, and my license is one click from verified. Text or call and we will sort it.
If you employ people rather than just yourself, the small business guide covers the employer side, including the HRA routes that let your team buy their own plans.
